Post April & Pre May

I’ve been having some trouble focusing my education efforts. And so I’ve come up with the idea of doing a look back at education efforts for the past month. And then looking at what I plan on doing in the next month. I think this will help me focus and correct the ship when it starts to get adrift. So with that explanation out of the way…

April:

  • Started reading Applying UML and Patterns (which required I put the Object Design book on hold)
  • Put learning Ruby on hold so I can apply myself more towards design patterns and OO analysis & design.
  • Switched to waking up at 5:30 AM. This allows me to take a one hour morning walk each day. Definitely something I can’t live without now that I’m back into the habit.

May:

  • Finish the Applying UML and Patterns book.
  • Start working through the patterns in GoF book. Work through 2-3 patterns by creating multiple implementations.
  • Complete a small application which uses my current understanding of things.
  • Resume reading Object Design book.

  1. I’m not quite sure I’m ready to answer that question. I’m about half way through the book so far so all I’ve really read is the UML stuff. In terms of learning UML in a format that I’ll actually use and makes sense to me it’s been awesome. I totally feel like I could use the UML he teaches without it getting dumb. It’s also nice how he talks about the mistakes people usually make when using UML. I’m so guilty of them which is a large part of why I always thought UML wasn’t that interesting. But having seen the communication format and what not it’s a lot more interesting.

I’m finally getting into the GRASP stuff so we’ll see how it does as an OO A/D book. I do find it a bit funny how much he keeps mentioning OO A/D yet you have to read so much to get to it.

    What’s your view so far?
